Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environmental Remediation and Pollution Control was founded in 2004 upon the approval of Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Commission and Tianjin Education Commission. The key laboratory has over 500 square meters of office space and over 3000 square meters of lab space. The overarching missions of the key laboratory are: serving the needs of the development and opening of Tianjin and Tianjin Binhai New Area, seeking solutions for important environmental issues during urbanization of the Tianjin mega-city, and establishing a new platform with emphasis on both applied research in environmental science and technology development in environmental engineering.

The two main research directions of the key laboratory are:

1)      Contamination mechanisms during urbanization – source apportionment, fate and transport, ecological impact of contaminants in surface and groundwater water, and soil environment;

2)      Pollution control and environmental remediation – new theories and technologies for source control, pathway elimination, and remediation of polluted environmental media.

The organization of the key laboratory is shown as following.  The key laboratory consists of an advisory board (including 12 internationally renowned researchers in the field), a director, two associate-directors and an assistant director, and three research teams consisting 23 full-time researchers (including 8 full-professors, 10 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 2 technicians).
