“State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Urban Ambient Air Particulate Matter Pollution Prevention and Control” (Key laboratory) is located in the Nankai University, established by China Environmental Protection Department in 2007. The laboratory is currently the only key laboratory named after atmospheric particulate matter in China, and has been awarded excellent results in the evaluations of the key laboratories of the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Our mission

With the purpose of improving air quality and protecting the health of the people, the key laboratory integrates application research and personnel training to provide scientific and technological support for national and local environmental air quality management and pollution control decisions.

Construction goals

The key laboratory is committed to building a theoretical innovation base and a talent training base for the research on air pollution prevention and control in China; to developing a comprehensive observation and research platform for the atmospheric environment at the international advanced level, a national platform for the dynamic sharing of particulate matter spectra, and a demonstration base for online analysis of pollution sources. The goal of the works is to build an internationally innovative research team of air pollution prevention and control with important academic status and influence.

Research areas

   The diagnosis methods of sources, causes and effecting factors of air pollution;

   Air pollution monitoring, detection and prevention technology;

   The technology for policy-making and management of air pollution prevention and control;

   The influence of atmospheric particulate matters on human health.

In the past three years, the laboratory has undertaken more than 60 various scientific research projects, hosting two of the national key R&D plan projects, hosting five of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, participating three of the National Science and Technology Support Projects, hosting and participating five public welfare industry research projects and six Tianjin Science and Technology Plan Projects, etc. More than 100 research papers were published, including more than 60 SCI/EI papers. More achievements contain a monograph in English, six software copyrights and eight utility model patents. The laboratory won three second prizes of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress awards and was selected as an innovation team in key areas of Tianjin.

The laboratory was engaged in air quality assurance and evaluation for APEC, the Youth Olympic Games, “G20” Summit and other national important activities. The laboratory has carried out research and technology promotion of air pollution prevention and control in more than 40 cities nationwide, undertook the national Research Program for Key Issues in Air Pollution Control to provide important scientific and technological support for national and local air pollution prevention and control.
